Rational rose muncul dengan versi pertamanya tahun 2001 ,kmd 2002,2003 dan akhirnya mengeluarkan RATIONAL XDE. Rational XDE ini merupakan kelanjutan dari UML untuk melakukan Round Trip Engineering.Sebelumnya tools rational hanya bisa melakukan forward engineering dan reverse engineering.Rational XDE ini merupakaan tools yang cool, dia bisa melakukan sinkronisasi design dan code pada environment yang sama dalam waktu yang singkat.
